‘It was a terrible thing’: Panama declares state of emergency as quake aftershocks rattle communities

More than 100 aftershocks as high as magnitude-5.8 recorded after two quakes toppled buildings and prompted evacuations Panama’s government has declared a state of emergency on Saturday as the aftershocks of two powerful earthquakes that roiled the country shook communities for hours. Officials did not attribute any deaths to Friday’s 7.7- and 6.6-magnitude earthquakes, but reported damages in all 10 of Panama’s provinces and two Indigenous territories.

Delhi braces for more protests as 'cockroach' group's leaders released

A court in the Indian capital has ordered the release of top leaders of the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) even as the city braces for protests for a second day with thousands of security personnel deployed and roads barricaded. Abhijeet Dipke - who began the movement in May after India's Chief Justice likened some jobless young people to "cockroaches" - and other leaders had been detained on arrival in Delhi on Saturday to lead protests seeking electoral reforms. Police refused them permission to protest and unprecedented curbs were in place to thwart the protesters from reaching the venue.

Hurricane Simon strengthens into Category 4 storm as it takes aim at Mexico

Simon has strengthened into a powerful Category 4 hurricane as it barrels toward Mexico's Pacific coast. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday that Simon's maximum sustained winds increased to 155 miles per hour. The hurricane center said it expects Simon to approach Mexico's west-central coast on Sunday as a major hurricane, which is defined as a Category 3 storm or stronger, with winds of at least 111 mph.
