Unprecedented university donation from Citadel CEO Ken Griffin will go toward building a new Miami campus Carnegie Mellon University will receive an unprecedented $3bn donation from billionaire investor Ken Griffin, making it the largest single donation in the history of US education. Griffin, 57, is the founder and CEO of Citadel, described as the most profitable hedge fund in history. The money is going toward a new Miami campus as well as big investments at the university’s longtime home in Pittsburgh.

Court temporarily halts Christa Pike's execution in Tennessee

A United States district court has temporarily stayed the execution of Christa Pike , the only woman on Tennessee's death row, just hours before she was scheduled to receive a lethal injection on Wednesday. Although the execution has been halted, it could still proceed later Wednesday, as the state intends to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to vacate the last-minute district court order, an attorney for Pike said. If it does happen, Pike would become the only woman executed in the state in the last 200 years.

FTC probing Anthropic and OpenAI over AI safety threats

The Federal Trade Commission confirmed Wednesday that it has launched an investigation into Anthropic, OpenAI and other artificial intelligence companies over the potential risk their technology poses to consumers. As part of the probe, the FTC plans to request information from the companies, including the nonprofit research group METR, a government agency spokesperson confirmed. The FTC is also drafting civil investigative demands to compel AI executives to testify about their products, according to the New York Post, which first reported the investigation into the AI companies.
