A federal grand jury Tuesday declined to indict Cassidy Hutchinson — the former White House aide-turned-star witness against President Donald Trump — on criminal charges, a senior U.S. official confirmed to NBC News.

Prosecutors were trying to indict Hutchinson for statements she made about Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

The grand jury in Washington returned a “no bill,” meaning it rejected the Justice Department’s efforts to indict Hutchinson. Her name was not mentioned in the courtroom when the no bill was announced, but the senior U.S. official confirmed it was the Hutchinson case.

The federal district judge overseeing the Justice Department's lawsuit asking California to segregate roughly 20,000 ballot belonging to individuals it claims are "likely" noncitizens appeared skeptical of the DOJ's efforts to seek emergency action just a week from the state's election. U.S. District Judge David O. Carter said in court Tuesday he intends to appoint a special master to probe DOJ's process that led it to compile the list of alleged 20,000 likely non-citizens, dealing a setback to the Trump administration's attempt to quickly intervene in the election.
