LA officials document first case of a rabid raccoon in more than 50 years

Four people and a dog may have been exposed to rabies from the animal, Los Angeles public health officials say Los Angeles county recently documented its first rabid raccoon in more than 50 years, and health officials are urging residents to never touch wild animals. The county’s department of public health announced in a statement this week that four people and a dog may have been exposed to the animal at a back yard work site in the city of Westlake Village. The raccoon appeared in ill-health but was not aggressive.

Iconic penguin colony sees "population collapse," study finds

A remote island near Antarctica is no longer home to the world's largest penguin colony as climate-driven changes to ocean food chains likely devastated its once-thriving inhabitants and caused a "population collapse," researchers said Wednesday. Drone and satellite images showed that the volcanic island of Zavodovski lost more than 680,000 — or nearly two-thirds — of its chinstrap penguins between 2011 and 2025, according to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). "That's a very rapid loss," Norman Ratcliffe, the lead author of the BAS study published in the journal Current Biology, told AFP.
