British Columbia's new premier lucks into the job in unexpected political turn

A relative outsider has been elected the new leader of the Canadian province of British Columbia after the provincial Conservatives swept to power in a snap election.
Lorne Doerkson, who took the helm of the party just weeks ago, will be British Columbia's new premier after the Conservatives won a majority of seats in the legislative assembly. It's the first time the party has won in the province in nearly a century.
Outgoing Premier David Eby, of the New Democratic Party (NDP), called the snap election last month - two years early - in an attempt to shore up power for his party.
