France is braced for major protests on Tuesday, after organisers called for a nationwide day of action in support of students demanding more investment in education.

It comes after a week of demonstrations, which saw students blockading hundreds of schools, at least 190 students injured, and more than 5,000 people arrested.

One student had his hand blown off during a confrontation on Monday, while another was reportedly struck in the head by a tear gas grenade last week.

Concerns of US interference weigh on Brazil vote

Conservative Senator Flavio Bolsonaro pulled off a surprise on Sunday in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election by finishing ahead of the incumbent left-wing President Lula, whom he will face in the runoff on October 25. Suspicions of U.S. interference have been hanging over the campaign, even as Donald Trump has never hidden his closeness to the far-right former president Bolsonaro - Flavio’s father - and his animosity toward Lula da Silva. FRANCE 24's Emerald Maxwell reports.
