A Democratic congressional candidate in Arizona says she was raped over the summer while trying to repair a campaign sign. Bernadette Greene-Placentia, who is running in the state's 8th district to try to unseat GOP Rep. Abe Hamadeh, told the Phoenix New Times, a local news outlet, that she was attacked at around 2 a.m. as she was walking toward a campaign sign in a parking lot in Sun City, north of Phoenix. Greene-Placentia said she was attacked, subdued and then woke up to find that she was being raped by an unknown assailant.
Tropical Storm Isaias has formed in the Gulf and is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday before approaching the U.S. northern Gulf Coast on Friday, according to forecasters.
Christa Pike 's attorneys said she has pneumonia, a blood clot, couldn't swallow, and is unable to move her arms or hands once she regained consciousness in a Tennessee hospital, days after the death row inmate survived a botched execution by the state. "Her hands looked like if you were to blow up a surgical glove," said one of Pike's attorneys, Randy Spivey, at a Wednesday news conference. "It was extraordinary." Spivey said he and Pike's other attorneys were told she was brain-dead on Monday and expected her to be removed from life support. But by the next day, she had woken up and started talking, he said.
An 18-year-old Twin Cities man accused of telling an FBI informant he planned to carry out an attack later this month at Mall of America was arrested at gunpoint Tuesday in Richfield, Minnesota, during an arranged meeting to buy an assault rifle, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
