Americans are electing members of Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. All 435 House seats are up for election. In the Senate, only 35 of 100 seats are being contested because senators serve six-year terms. This results tracker shows both the races being decided now and the 65 seats that are not up for election this year - 34 held by Democrats and 31 by Republicans. The first polls have closed in the US midterm elections, which will shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency. The outcome determines which party - Trump's Republicans or opposition Democrats - controls Congress.
CBS News rates the race between GOP Sen. Darline Graham and Democrat Annie Andrews a toss-up. Most voters don't think Darline Graham has the right experience to be a U.S. senator. But it's not a dealbreaker for all voters — about a quarter who hold this view are still voting for Graham, who was named to fill the seat held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham. At the same time, about half of voters say of Andrews that her views are too extreme. And most of those voters are voting against Andrews.
Republicans are defending a 53-47 majority in the Senate, as Democrats aim to flip enough seats to gain control.
