What is Nasa's Artemis III mission? And what comes next?

Photo: BBC

Nasa has announced more details about its next Artemis mission, which is set to launch in the summer of 2027.

The Artemis III mission will not head to the Moon. Instead four astronauts will fly to low Earth orbit where they will dock with two prototype lunar landers, one made by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin company and the other by Elon Musk's SpaceX.

This will pave the way for the Artemis IV mission, currently scheduled for 2028, which will see astronauts land on the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.

A-81 Reaches South Georgia

The Antarctic iceberg made a relatively quick exit from the Weddell Sea, only to slow at the edge of a remote island’s underwater shelf. Some Antarctic icebergs linger close to home for decades, running aground near the ice shelves that spawned them or circling partway around the continent on coastal currents. Others, like Iceberg A-81, make a faster exit, heading north out of the Weddell Sea along a route well-traveled by the region’s bergs. NASA’s Perseverance Views Dust at Neretva Vallis

This 360-degree look at Neretva Vallis within Mars’ Jezero Crater was stitched together using 217 images acquired by the rover’s Mastcam-Z on May 20, 2024, the 1,155th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. While it is a wind-swept dusty vista today, billions of years ago it was home to a river channel that fed fresh water into Jezero Crater. NASA explores the unknown in air and space, innovates for the benefit of humanity, and inspires the world through discovery.
