Fired OpenAI researchers say they were let go for 'prioritising safety'

Three former OpenAI researchers sacked for allegedly mishandling information claim they were instead let go because they raised safety concerns at the tech firm.

"I believe we were fired for prioritising safety over the near-term interests of OpenAI as a corporation," Mikita Balesni posted on X , external alongside an open letter to the ChatGPT-maker, written with fellow ex-employees.

On 2 October, a spokesperson for the AI firm told the BBC its investigation "confirmed that these individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures".

Russian strikes kill 2 in Ukraine as Kyiv struggles to counter Russian attacks

KYIV, Ukraine -- Russian strikes killed two people and wounded five more across Ukraine, officials said Friday, as Ukraine struggles to counter escalating Russian bombardments that have killed more than 50 people over the past three days. One man was killed and five people were wounded in Russian strikes on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region Friday morning, said Mykhailo Semikin, the head of the regional military administration. He said that the attacks hit residential areas and that a child was among the wounded.

Fort Hood survivor supports gunman's execution by firing squad but questions livestream

A former US Army sergeant who survived the mass shooting on Fort Hood has said that while he supports the execution of the gunman by firing squad, he is concerned about it being livestreamed. Alonzo Lunsford, who was shot seven times, told the BBC that the "method is befitting" for Nidal Hasan because other methods like lethal injection would be "doing him a favour". Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 unarmed US soldiers in a medical building at Fort Hood, in Texas, in 2009.
